The Starting System:
The starting system converts electrical energy from the batteries into mechanical energy to turn the engine over. A malfunction within the starting system will make it difficult to get the engine running. The starter motor is a small but powerful electric motor that delivers a high degree of power for a short period of time. Therefore a dynamic test during starter acceleration and deceleration periods are highly recommended for defect detection.
MEA EOL systems test the starter load performance during the acceleration period. Since the test is done during the acceleration period, the static and dynamic data measured shows the exact starter working behavior, being the best way for defect detection. In addition, if requested, the MEA EOL can be connected to a physical load. During the tests, the system uses a power supply with programmable voltage, resistance, and current, performing battery load simulation.
The starter solenoid is an electromagnetic switch mounted on the starter motor. When coils inside the solenoid are energized by electricity, they create a magnetic field that attracts and pulls a plunger, activating the starter motor.
MEA EOL systems measure the solenoid pull-in & hold-in coil resistance, current, and contact voltage drop. In addition, the systems test for “mechanical defects”, such as solenoid over traveling, weak spring (contact spring force and return force), and the contact switch time.
MEA systems are good for a large variety of starters, with output power from 0.3 kW up to 12 kW.
